NEET and JEE Time Table: Building a Weekly Schedule That Survives Real Life

Every NEET and JEE aspirant has, at some point, made a beautiful colour-coded timetable that collapsed within nine days. The failure is usually blamed on discipline. In reality most of these schedules are designed for an ideal day that never occurs — no school, no tiredness, no unexpected guests, no bad mood — and any plan built on ideal conditions fails on contact with an ordinary Tuesday.

What follows is a scheduling approach designed for real weeks, with built-in slack, a rotation that prevents any subject from being quietly abandoned, and a recovery procedure for when you inevitably fall behind.

Plan in weeks, measure in units

Do not schedule by hours. Hours measure attendance, not work. Schedule by units: one unit is one concept learned plus twenty to thirty questions solved on it, and typically takes between ninety minutes and two hours. Give your week a unit target — twenty to twenty-four units for a full-time dropper, twelve to fifteen for a student attending school — and distribute them freely across the week.

This change fixes the most common failure mode. When Tuesday collapses, you have not broken the plan; you have simply moved three units to Saturday. The weekly total is what you protect, and the slack you must deliberately leave — at least four unscheduled units a week — is what makes the plan survivable.

Rotate subjects so nothing gets abandoned

The natural drift is towards the subject you enjoy. For NEET aspirants that is usually Biology, and Physics quietly falls behind until it becomes the reason for a low rank. For JEE aspirants, Chemistry — particularly Inorganic — is the usual casualty. A rotation rule fixes this without requiring judgement: every study day must contain at least two different subjects, and every subject must appear at least twice a week.

For NEET, a sound weekly distribution is roughly forty per cent Biology, thirty-five per cent Chemistry and twenty-five per cent Physics, adjusted upward for whichever subject your last full test exposed. For JEE, keep it near even across the three, with a slight tilt towards Mathematics in the learning phase and towards Physics in the practice phase.

NCERT: what it means to actually finish it

For NEET Biology, the instruction to 'read NCERT' is repeated so often that it has lost its meaning. Finishing NCERT does not mean reading the chapter. It means being able to reconstruct, from memory, every diagram, every table, every example organism and every line in the summary — including the sentences in small print, which have historically produced a meaningful number of questions.

A workable method is line-by-line reading with a pencil, followed within two days by a closed-book reconstruction of the chapter's headings and diagrams, followed by previous-year questions on that chapter. Three passes of the whole book across the year is a reasonable target, with the third pass being pure recall rather than reading.

For JEE, NCERT plays a different role. It is essential and often sufficient for Inorganic Chemistry, useful as a foundation in Physical and Organic Chemistry, and merely a starting point in Physics and Mathematics, where problem-solving depth from a standard practice book is required beyond it.

Revision must be scheduled, not intended

Everybody intends to revise; very few schedule it, and unscheduled revision does not happen. Reserve one full day each week — Sunday works for most — for revision only, with no new topics. Cover the current week first, then one older week chosen on rotation. This spaced pattern, where each topic returns after a day, a week and then a month, is dramatically more efficient than a single re-read at the end of the year.

In the last three months, invert the ratio: seventy per cent revision and practice, thirty per cent new material, and stop starting new topics entirely in the final four weeks unless a topic is both high-weightage and completely untouched.

How to recover a lost week

You will lose a week — to illness, to a family event, to burnout. The recovery rule is simple and must be decided now, while you are calm, rather than later, while you are panicking: do not attempt to make up the backlog. Instead, drop the lowest-weightage units from the lost week permanently, carry forward only the essentials, and resume the normal schedule immediately.

Trying to compress two weeks into one produces a second lost week with high reliability. Aspirants who accept a small permanent loss and continue almost always finish ahead of those who try to repay every hour.
