The Staff Selection Commission's Combined Graduate Level examination is not a difficult paper in the academic sense. Almost every question in Tier 1 is something a sincere Class 10 student could solve given enough time. The difficulty is entirely different: you get roughly forty-eight seconds per question, negative marking punishes guesswork, and around thirty lakh candidates compete for a few thousand posts. That combination turns SSC CGL into a test of speed, accuracy and consistency rather than a test of knowledge.
This guide lays out a six-month preparation plan that we have built around how the paper is actually scored. It assumes you are starting from an average base — you understand school mathematics, your English is functional but not polished, and you have somewhere between four and six focused hours a day. If you have less time, stretch the same sequence over nine months instead of compressing it. The order of topics matters more than the speed at which you cover them.
Understand what the paper rewards before you open a book
Tier 1 has one hundred questions across four sections: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension. Each section carries fifty marks, each correct answer gives two marks, and every wrong answer costs half a mark. There is no sectional cut-off in Tier 1, which has an important consequence that most beginners miss: your total is what matters, so you should invest your study hours where marks come cheapest, not where you feel weakest emotionally.
Reasoning and General Awareness are the cheapest marks on the paper. A well-prepared candidate answers most reasoning questions in under thirty seconds and General Awareness questions in under ten, which frees up the clock for Quantitative Aptitude, where the real time is spent. Candidates who neglect General Awareness because it feels boring routinely lose fifteen to twenty marks that cost their better-prepared competitors almost no time at all.

Months one and two: build the arithmetic base
Almost every scoring problem in Quantitative Aptitude descends from a small set of arithmetic ideas: ratio and proportion, percentage, profit and loss, time and work, time speed and distance, simple and compound interest, and averages. Spend the first eight weeks on nothing but these, in that order, because each one builds on the previous. Percentage is the parent topic — profit and loss, discount, interest and data interpretation are all percentage in different clothing, and a student who is genuinely fluent in percentages solves half the arithmetic paper mentally.
Fluency here means something specific. It means you know the fraction equivalents up to one-twentieth by heart, you can convert 37.5 per cent to three-eighths without thinking, and you use the multiplying-factor method rather than writing long equations. Give the first thirty minutes of every study day to a calculation drill: twenty squares, twenty cubes, ten multiplication problems of two-digit by two-digit, and ten percentage conversions. Do this on paper with a timer. Six weeks of that drill is worth more than six months of watching solution videos.
In parallel, cover reasoning as a light daily habit rather than a heavy block. Twenty minutes on one chapter — series, analogy, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, syllogism, seating arrangement — is enough, because reasoning is pattern recognition and pattern recognition improves with spaced exposure rather than long sittings.
Months three and four: advanced maths, English and daily current affairs
From the third month, add the advanced portion of Quantitative Aptitude — algebra, geometry, mensuration and trigonometry. These four together contribute roughly eight to ten questions in Tier 1 and a much larger share in Tier 2, and they are the reason strong candidates separate from average ones. Algebra in SSC is formula-driven: master the identities around x plus one over x, componendo and dividendo, and the standard factorisations, and a large family of questions collapses into a single substitution.
For English, stop trying to memorise word lists. The paper tests four things repeatedly: error spotting, sentence improvement, cloze passages and vocabulary in context. Read one editorial a day, note every unfamiliar word with the sentence it appeared in, and revise those sentences rather than isolated meanings. Grammar should be learned as a short set of rules — subject-verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions, parallelism and modifiers — and then drilled through two hundred error-spotting questions until the mistakes start looking obvious.
General Awareness must become a daily fifteen-minute habit from month three, not a month-six panic. Static topics — Indian polity, medieval and modern history, physical geography of India, basic physics and chemistry, and economy fundamentals — carry more weight than current affairs in SSC. Cover one static chapter each week and read a compact monthly current-affairs digest rather than chasing every news headline.
Months five and six: mock tests and the revision loop
From the fifth month onwards, one full-length mock every alternate day is non-negotiable, and the analysis of the mock should take longer than the mock itself. Attempting a test teaches you almost nothing on its own; the learning happens when you classify every mistake into one of three buckets. Bucket one is 'I did not know the concept' — that goes back into the study plan. Bucket two is 'I knew it but was slow' — that goes into the calculation drill. Bucket three is 'silly mistake' — and this bucket is the most important, because silly mistakes are not random. They cluster around specific habits like misreading 'not', skipping a unit conversion, or rushing the first five minutes.
Keep a single mistake notebook and write only bucket-two and bucket-three errors in it. Before every subsequent mock, read the last two pages of that notebook. Candidates who do this consistently typically gain ten to fifteen marks over eight weeks without learning a single new concept.
Your revision loop in the final eight weeks should be weekly, not one-time: one day for formulas, one day for static General Awareness, one day for grammar rules, and the rest for mocks and analysis. Memory decays predictably, and revisiting material at increasing intervals — a day later, a week later, a month later — is far more efficient than re-reading a chapter once at the end.
- Take every mock at the same time of day as your actual exam slot.
- Never leave a mock unanalysed — an unanalysed mock is a wasted three hours.
- Track attempts and accuracy separately; eighty attempts at ninety per cent accuracy beats ninety-five attempts at seventy-five per cent.
- Stop taking new mocks in the final three days and revise your mistake notebook instead.
The Tier 2 shift most candidates prepare for too late
Tier 2 is a different examination in character. The mathematics is deeper, the English is longer, and a computer knowledge and data entry component enters the picture. Because the qualifying pattern places heavy weight on Tier 2, the sensible approach is to begin Tier 2 level practice for mathematics and English from month four, well before Tier 1 results arrive. The overlap is large enough that this costs you very little Tier 1 preparation and saves several weeks later.
The computer knowledge section is the easiest scoring opportunity in the entire selection process, and it is routinely under-prepared. It covers basics of hardware and software, MS Office, internet and networking fundamentals, and elementary cyber-security awareness. Fifteen to twenty focused hours across the whole preparation is typically enough to secure nearly full marks there.
