JEE Main Syllabus: Maths, Physics & Chemistry Units and Pattern

JEE Main syllabus with unit-wise Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry topics, Paper 1 pattern, marking scheme and a preparation plan for Class 11, 12 and droppers.

Attempts
Two sessions per year, for three consecutive years after Class 12.
Negative marking
+4 correct, −1 wrong in MCQs. Numerical value questions also carry −1.
Question paper language
13 languages including English and Hindi.

How to cover this syllabus

  1. 1Finish NCERT Chemistry twice — inorganic questions are often lifted directly from it.
  2. 2For Maths, solve 40–50 problems per chapter across difficulty levels instead of reading theory repeatedly.
  3. 3Use the session gap smartly: attempt Session 1 seriously, then fix weak chapters before Session 2.
  4. 4Practise on a computer screen — the CBT interface, on-screen calculator-free arithmetic and marking for review need drill.
  5. 5Log every silly mistake. In JEE Main, rank is lost to careless errors more than to hard questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is there negative marking in JEE Main numerical questions?

Yes. Since the recent pattern change, numerical value questions also carry −1 for a wrong answer, so guess only when you can narrow it down.

Which is the best session of JEE Main to attempt?

Attempt both. NTA considers the better of your two NTA scores, so Session 1 acts as a full-scale rehearsal.

Is the JEE Main syllabus the same as JEE Advanced?

Largely overlapping, but Advanced goes deeper and adds a few topics while dropping some Main-only chapters.
